The Strolling Jim 40, held in Wartrace, Tennessee, is one of the top-five oldest ultras in America that is still being held to the present day. It is a road race that runs on very hilly paved and dirt roads, the brainchild of Gary Cantrell (Lazarus Lake).

At packet pick up, runners receive a Strolling Jim shirt, a booklet with lots of historic information and course maps, the race bib with a timing chip, and perhaps a few giveaways. All finishers in all distances receive a finisher’s medal.
Aid stations containing water, hydration drinks, some light snacks, and fruits will be at 7.5, 13.1, 21.5, 29, 35, and 39 (not all stations will have exactly the same thing). Water jugs will be along the road at the drops between aid stations at 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 17, 23.5, 31, 33, and 37.
